Request for $850

The organisers of the Waipori Reunion have support for an information panel and kiosk to be installed at the Waipori cemetery.

Last year Waipori Reunion committee member Roger Cotton asked the Lawrence Tuapeka Community Board for funding for an information panel at the cemetery in time for the reunion at Easter.

A $750 grant was approved by the board, but the decision was overturned by the full Clutha District Council, which felt it could set a precedent.

Last week members of the Waipori Reunion committee again asked the board for a contribution, this time to pay for the panelling and digital printing of the panel and kiosk.

The committee sought $850 towards the $1800 total cost.

Mr Cotton said a local person had offered to pay for the kiosk structure while volunteers would prepare the site.

Community board member Liz Forbes said she had only recently come to appreciate the full significance and size of the cemetery, and supported the new application.

There were 42 headstones at the Waipori cemetery for about 80 people but it was thought there were almost 200 buried.

The application was approved at the community board meeting and will go back before the full council.
