Balclutha man Samuel White was the second runner-up at the Mr Gay New Zealand competition in Auckland over the weekend and was happy with his efforts.

‘‘I feel bloody good, actually,'' he said.

‘‘The guy that won is a friend of mine from Wellington and I'm stoked he won.''

The final judging took place yesterday at the official Big Gay Out public event at Auckland's Coyle Park.

Mr White, the Otago Daily Times South Otago reporter, said the competition was really fun and included a question-and-answer and a fundraising section.

Each competitor had to raise as much money from the crowd as possible for the NZ Aids Foundation.

‘‘I got into my wrestling singlet-slash-Speedos and just ran around [collecting money]. This was the first time I'd been in any pride event at all. It was really cool.''

He had not decided whether he would enter next year's competition, but said he would be involved in making people aware of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) communities.

The Mr Gay New Zealand event began in 2009 and works with charities and LGBTI organisations to help promote healthy lifestyles.

The winner will represent New Zealand at Mr Gay World 2016 in Malta.
