The West Otago Health Trust, representing the Clutha district, has won the supreme national award at the Trustpower National Community Awards.

West Otago Health Ltd chairwoman Marianne Parks said the win was "pretty amazing'', coming after finals in Dunedin on Saturday and a hard-fought district competition.

"We're absolutely stoked,'' Mrs Parks added.

The win still felt "a bit surreal'' but she was delighted there had been a win for Tapanui and for Clutha, the first time a community team representing Clutha had taken the top national award.

"I'm just absolutely rapt for the district.''

The winning team comprised Mrs Parks, West Otago Health Trust chairman Alister Body, and Clutha Mayor Bryan Cadogan and Allyson Cadogan.

They beat 24 other teams to win the top award.

During the finals, at Otago Boys' High School, the Clutha representatives told participants about their work involving raising almost $4million for the brand new community-owned and run West Otago Health Centre, in Tapanui.

More than 20,000 hours of volunteer fundraising over the previous five years had gone into the $3.6 million medical centre that serves West Otago.

The George and Caroline Edgar Memorial Building, which houses the West Otago Medical Centre and Ribbonwood Country Home, the latter an aged-care facility, opened in Tapanui in 2014.

As 2015 Trustpower National Community Award supreme winner, the West Otago trust received a custom-made trophy, $4000 in prize money, a $1000 Exult volunteer sector consultancy voucher and a framed certificate.
