Mrs Soper said it was a ‘‘special moment'' being announced to represent the Clutha District RSA so far from home. It was ‘‘pretty amazing'' to hear Last Post being played from the ruins around the cemetery.
‘‘An experience you would never forget,'' she said.
The pair travelled to Italy and were formally invited to take part in the wreath-laying ceremony.
They were given a special Anzac Day 2016 medal as part of the commemorations.
Afterwards, the pair went to morning tea at the Australian ambassador's residence in Rome.
