Car goes through fence

Police in South Otago were kept busy on Sunday morning after a vehicle allegedly stolen by a teenager crashed through a fence.

Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, said a 16-year-old male took a van early on Sunday.

The vehicle was heading towards Milton when it went through a fence on State Highway 8 between Lawrence and Waitahuna about 5am. The teenager was uninjured but the van was moderately damaged.

The teenager was referred to Youth Aid and faced charges including careless driving.

Police also dealt with an alleged assault outside Hotel South Otago on Clyde St in Balclutha on Sunday morning.

Sgt Bull said a 21-year-old male from Balclutha was allegedly punched in the face about 3am which caused a tooth "to go through his lip''. He said more details were needed about the incident and inquiries were continuing.

The victim was given medical attention and was able to make a statement yesterday.
