The courthouse, on the corner of Paisley and Renfrew Sts, was added to Heritage New Zealand's list of historic places at the start of the year.
The courthouse was described as "aesthetically, architecturally and historically significant''.
Mrs Berney said this was due to it being designed by Invercargill architect John Mair, who went on to design other courthouses and government buildings in New Zealand.
Mrs Berney said the courthouse's historic classification as a Category 2 building made development limited but was still possible as long as it was approved by Heritage New Zealand.
Its historic status made it important to the Balclutha area as a whole, Mrs Berney said.
"I think it's important ... to be kept and given new lease of life.''
Four buildings were included in the sale.
There was the original court house, built in 1926, as well as the administration block, a storage building and an unused toilet block.
The courthouse was maintained during its use but was closed in 2011 due to concerns over earthquake strengthening.
Mrs Berney said the Balclutha courthouse, and several other Crown properties, were assessed following the Christchurch earthquake.
The Balclutha courthouse closed permanently in 2014 and court services were moved to Dunedin.
Opus International Consultants senior property consultant Robyn Fitchett declined to comment on the building. Heritage New Zealand was unavailable for comment.
