Farmer killed in Clutha crash named

Police have named the driver killed after his car collided with a ute near Balclutha in South Otago.

Peter Gerald Sinclair, a 51-year-old farmer from Te Houka, died yesterday in the crash on Moffat Rd, off State Highway 1.

Clutha-Taieri area response manager Senior Sergeant Alastair Dickie, of Mosgiel, said three other people sustained minor injuries, including Mr Sinclair's 18-year-old son.

Snr Sgt Dickie said the crash occurred when a Ford Courier ute travelling towards SH1 collided with a Toyota Corolla hatchback travelling in the opposite direction, at the brow of a hill, just before 5pm.

Mr Sinclair's car was extensively damage and he died at the scene. His son was the only passenger in the car.

The occupants of the ute were were attended to by ambulance medics at the scene.

Moffat Rd, about 10km from Balclutha, was closed overnight and diversions put in place.

The serious crash unit is investigating.
