A South Otago High School pupil hammered out the competition to get her artwork featured on television show The Block NZ.

Dayna Newbury (14), of Balclutha, has won a nationwide art competition to have her artwork featured on the renovation show along with three others from around the country.

She won a public vote with 71% of the 4989 votes.

As part of the prize, Dayna will travel to the set of the show early next month to see the houses renovated by contestants.

She also won $1000 worth of art supplies for her school and $1000 for herself.

At first, Dayna did not think she had won the competition, even though she saw online she had the most votes.

She became nervous when she did not receive an email straight away.

"I wanted a confirmation email actually confirming I had won.''

However, two days after the voting closed, the email came through, which she said felt "amazing''.

Dayna has not been to Auckland before and is looking forward to the trip.

She could not wait to see the houses and intended to make the most of her time there.

Whether her luck would continue was unclear but she had entered "a few more competitions''.

South Otago High School principal Mike Wright said he was proud of Dayna's achievement.

"It's really a credit to Dayna's achievement, as she just worked independently.''

Neither Mr Wright nor the art teachers knew about her entering the competition until after she had won.

The art teachers were going to have a "good think'' about what to buy with the $1000.

Mr Wright looked forward to celebrating Dayna's success with the school.
