Pupils of Heriot Primary School have put their best ideas forward for a new sign to welcome people to the small town.

Heriot Primary School principal Colin McHutchon said it was proposed to the school by the West Otago Community Board that school pupils could design new welcome signs for Heriot.

Mr McHutchon said it presented as an opportunity to tie in with the school's local history lessons.

"It was combination of that ... class and they finished the topic by working on [the designs].''

About 28 senior pupils offered designs for the welcome sign that incorporated historical symbols for the area.

It was difficult for pupils to isolate images that were important for them and the community, Mr McHutchon said.

"We're a close-knit rural community and the school is very much a reflection of the community so anything we can contribute to that ... is huge for us.''

Mr McHutchon said it was brilliant the children were able to do this.

"Any opportunity is gold.''

Teachers chose their 10 favourite designs to be presented to the community board on Wednesday.

Community board member John Herbert said it was unlikely a single design would become the final option.

The new sign was likely to incorporate several aspects of the pupils' images.

The board was likely to choose a mix of colour scheme, layout, symbols or catch-phrase, Mr Herbert said.

He planned to take the top 10 designs to a sign maker to see what options were available.

Not everyone on the community board had seen the designs yet and more discussion was needed.

The board would make a final decision on what the signs would look like sometime later in the year.
