A Milton woman says she is worried about repeated rubbish dumping in the area and was furious when she discovered a particularly large load of rubbish in the middle of the road outside Milton a few weeks ago.

Leora Werner was walking her dogs on Bush Gully Rd on July 17 when she discovered the pile of rubbish.

"It makes me quite angry because I'm quite environmentally conscious.''

It was unnecessary for anyone to dump their rubbish in the middle of a road, especially when it was heavily used by locals, she said.

"Most of it could have been recycled or burnt.

"It didn't need to be just dumped there.''

They should take it to the dump station in Balclutha.

While she could "do more'' to be environmentally friendly, she would never go and dump mess in the middle of nowhere, she said.

She said she had noticed "a lot'' of rubbish dumped in the area over the past few months.

Many residents used the area for exercising dogs, horse riding or going for a walk, she said.

It would be a shame if the road had to be closed because of the people who continued to dump their rubbish there, she said.

She reported the mess to the Clutha District Council and it has since been cleaned up.

Clutha District Council planning and regulatory manager David Campbell said the council had not been able to identify who was responsible for the illegal dumping, but investigations were continuing.

There was the possibility those responsible could be charged with an infringement fee of up to $400.

"We certainly thank the public for bringing it to our attention so we can find evidence and divvy up infringements like we have in the past.''

It was not possible for the council to be out and looking for this sort of behaviour.

It was important to acknowledge the assistance of the public, Mr Campbell said.

The police were not involved in the investigations.
