Rescued hunter continued trip

The hunter rescued yesterday morning after spending the night on a ledge in Fiordland was uninjured and immediately returned to his hunting group to continue their trip.

A statement from the Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand said the signal from the Taranaki hunter's personal locater beacon was detected at 6.55pm on Monday and a Southern Lakes Rescue Helicopter arrived on the scene about 8pm.

However, the helicopter was unable to winch the man free because of an 80m overhang.

The helicopter returned yesterday with an alpine cliff rescue team from Queenstown and rescued the man at 10.45am.

The man, in his early 20s, was one of a party of three and was unable to move up or down early on Monday evening.

The Otago Daily Times was told the man was flown to the hunters' camp to continue his trip.
