Toddler drowned in rubbish pit

An Eastern Southland toddler drowned after falling into rainwater which had gathered at one end of a large farm rubbish pit, coroner David Crerar has found.

Charlie Aaron Unwin was 23 months old when he died on June 12 last year. The pit was a short distance from the family house at Mandeville, near Gore.

An inquest into the death was held in Invercargill yesterday but Mr Crerar said because of an inquest office admininistrative error he was suppressing the publication of all evidence given at the inquest for now.

He said he would release his formal written findings as soon as possible.
