Boatie dies in Southland river

Searchers have this evening found the body of a man whose dinghy was found submerged in a Southland river earlier today.

Police were called about 12.50pm after a member of the public found the 2.4m aluminium dinghy on the Oreti River near Invercargill.

The boat was partially submerged and the 65-year-old owner was missing, Senior Sergeant Dave Scott said.

An extensive search and rescue operation was launched, and about 7pm the body of the missing man was found in the river near to where he was last seen.

His name will not be released until next of kin are notified.
