''I have been honoured to serve as the Southland area commander with a motivated and passionate team,'' he said.

''The last four years of sustained crime reductions have made our communities safer and are testament to the great efforts of both Southland Police and our community partners. I will miss working in Southland, but am also looking forward to new challenges in Canterbury.''

Supt Todd will take up the role in early March.

Southern district commander Superintendent Andrew Coster said Supt Todd would be missed following his contribution to Southern police and the community of Southland.
