Search continues for German tramper

Search and rescue teams are continuing with their search for a young German woman who has gone missing in the Manapouri Hope Arm area.

Police said the missing person was believed to be a 25-year-old German female known only as Tina.

It was believed she caught a water taxi at 11am yesterday to the western banks of the Waiau River to walk the Hope Arm hut.

However, she failed to meet her arranged water taxi at 6.30pm and police were notified two hours later.

Today, a rescue helicopter was conducting an aerial search of a 100 square kilometre area in the Manapouri Back Valley Area, while a ground team scoured the area.

Search teams made up of about 20 people would continue into the night, and plans for further search and rescue efforts will be reassessed tomorrow.

Police were also interviewing people at tourist accommodation outlets in the Te Anau and Manapouri areas.

Police said they were also checking with boaties in the Manapouri area to see of she was picked up by another boat.

Tina was described as around 25 years of age with long auburn hair and of medium build. She was last seen wearing dark clothing and a small daypack.

Police said they were still working to positively identify the young woman.

Anyone who may have seen the missing woman was asked to contact police on 03 249 7600.
