Police have concerns for a missing 11-year-old boy believed to be with his estranged stepfather.

Police want to locate Mike Zhao-Beckenridge, who left his Invercargill school about noon on Friday and was not there when his mother went to collect him at 3pm.

He is believed to be in the company of John Beckenridge (64), also known as John Robert Lundh, Knut Goran Roland Lundh, or John Bradford.

Mr Beckenridge is Mike's estranged stepfather and his contact with Mike is in breach of a parenting order.

Detective Sergeant Mark McCloy, of Invercargill, said the pair could be anywhere in New Zealand.

They are thought to be travelling in a dark blue Volkswagen Touareg, registration number DUY263.

Mike is 165cm tall, of solid build and of Asian descent.

Mr Beckenridge is 1.75m tall, of medium build and of Swedish descent. Police were concerned for Mike's safety and were keen to locate the pair as soon as possible.

Anyone who saw the pair was urged to call 111 immediately.

Anyone with information should contact the Southern District Command Centre on (03) 471-5002, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
