Police searching for a missing Invercargill boy believe they have found a car in Southland's Curio Bay.

Using an underwater camera suspended from a helicopter, police have today ''identified some items of interest'' they say may be linked to the disappearance of Mike Zhao-Beckenridge (11) and his step-father John Beckenridge.

A police spokesperson said they had found ''a large amount of metal'' among the rocks below the cliffs where they think a car entered the water.
It was believed the metal was a car, but police were yet yet to confirm the make or model.

They would reassess conditions, and hoped to re-deploy the camera at low tide, either tonight or tomorrow.

Inspector Kelvin Lloyd said yesterday the police were staying focused on the possibility the boy and his stepfather were still alive somewhere despite the car probably being in the water.
