'Nice evening out' ends in stabbing

A woman remains shaken following a serious assault in Te Anau yesterday morning.

Police are continuing to investigate the assault they have described as "serious", which happened early yesterday morning at the 'Moose Bar' in Te Anau.

A 27-year-old woman was admitted to Southland Hospital yesterday with multiple stab wounds.

Today, the woman's mother told NZME. News Service her daughter remained in intensive care, where she was being treated for stab wounds.

The woman said her daughter was at the bar for a work function when the assault took place at around 12.30am.

"It was meant to be a nice evening out."

She said her daughter "was doing very well" but was still shaken by the incident.

"It's all sort of a dream to be honest, we're very lucky she is here."

Operations manager for the Moose Bar Andrew Geldlard said he would not be making any comment as the matter was before the courts.

Meanwhile, police were still unsure as to what triggered the assault, a police spokesman said.

Yesterday police said early reports that the stabbing was the result of a fight were incorrect.

Today, the spokesman said statements were being taken from witnesses, which would help to form part of the police investigation.

"As the matter is now before the courts, police will be making no further comment in regards to this incident."

A 40-year-old woman from Te Anau has been arrested and charged with wounding with intent in relation to the assault, a police spokesman said.

She was due to appear at the Invercargill District Court today.
