Police were called to the incident about 8.15pm, where a car had collided with a power pole after leaving the road near Five Rivers in Lumsden, Inspector Peter Hegarty said.
The crash occurred at the intersection of State Highway 6 and State Highway 97.
The person with serious injuries was being flown to Invercargill by helicopter, a St John ambulance spokeswoman said.
