A dairy farm worker died yesterday when the car he was driving was involved in a collision with a campervan that police believe failed to stop at a northern Southland intersection.

Senior Sergeant Richard McPhail, of Gore, said emergency services were called to the crash, at the intersection of Riversdale-Waikaia Rd and Two Chain Rd, north of Riversdale, about 9.30am.

Pradeep Edirisinghe (44), a Sri Lankan working on a dairy farm in the Riversdale area, died in the crash.

Mr Edirisinghe was the sole occupant of the Nissan car travelling north on Riversdale-Waikaia Rd.

The car and a Toyota Hiace van collided. The male driver and female passenger in the van were Italians, aged in their 20s, travelling west on Two Chain Rd.

The two Italians were flown by Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter to Dunedin Hospital. The woman sustained serious injuries. The driver of the van was interviewed as part of the crash investigation.

The early investigation indicated the Italian driver failed to stop at a stop sign, his vehicle striking the car, Snr Sgt McPhail said.

The road was closed for about four hours as the serious crash investigation completed a scene examination.

The ODT understands the Italians are tourists.
