Man denies murdering toddler

A man accused of murdering a toddler at Wallacetown, near Invercargill last month, has pleaded not guilty.

He appeared in the High Court at Invercargill today via audio-visual link from Dunedin and sat with his head bowed through much of the short hearing.

His counsel John Westgate, who was also in Dunedin, told Justice Mander that his client has elected trial by jury.

The man is in custody and not seeking bail.

Justice Mander remanded the accused to reappear on February 2.

He granted continued interim suppression of the name of the man and toddler.
