Toddler's death case: man pleads not guilty

A man accused of murdering a toddler at Wallacetown, near Invercargill, last month has pleaded not guilty.

He appeared in the High Court at Invercargill today via audio-visual link from Dunedin and sat with his head bowed through much of the short hearing.

His counsel, John Westgate, who was also in Dunedin, told Justice Cameron Mander his client elected trial by jury. He was in custody and was not seeking bail.

Justice Mander noted his plea and remanded him to appear for a pre-trial case management hearing on February 2.

He granted continued interim suppression of the man's name and the name of the deceased.
