Police officers set up a cordon outside Invercargill Prison, on the corner of Victoria Ave and Leven St, after a fire broke out in the prison's laundry yesterday afternoon.

A Fire Service shift manager said five crews were sent to the prison after an alarm was activated.

Firefighters were still at the prison mopping up last night, but the situation was under control, he said.

It was not known what caused the fire.

Senior Sergeant Brian Benn, of Dunedin, said Invercargill police gave external assistance.
