Girl linked to at least 12 thefts

An 11-year-old girl preying on the trust and kindness of others has been linked to at least a dozen Invercargill burglaries.

Invercargill police say the girl has gained access to several homes by telling their occupants fabricated stories and then stealing items from the properties.

In other cases she had entered through insecure windows and doors, Detective Senior Sergeant Stu Harvey said.

"She's used a variety of stories when she has been speaking to people,'' he said.

"One example is she talks about looking for a dog.''

Once inside she had targeted jewellery, wallets and cellphones.

Police had identified at least a dozen burglaries they believed were linked to the 11-year-old, but suspected there might be more victims.

"We are now getting further information that there might be others,'' Det Snr Sgt Harvey said.

Police warned Invercargill residents to be vigilant about letting people into their homes and to check and secure entry points.

"The main focus for us now is making sure that if she is out there doing this stuff that it's reported straight away,'' he said.

"If they see this girl they need to call us ASAP.''

The girl came to police attention following one of the burglaries.

Youth Aid was dealing with her.

Det Snr Sgt Harvey did not want to comment on the girl's family situation or their knowledge of the incidents.

The burglaries occurred over a four to six-week period, though police were keeping an open mind on the timeframe.

He was not willing to speculate on her motivation.

"I don't know what the motivation is and that's something we need to discuss with her.''

If anyone saw the girl or any suspicious behaviour they should contact police immediately on 111.

Anyone with information about the burglaries or who believed they might be a victim of the 11-year-old should contact Invercargill police on (03) 211-0400.

Information could also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800-555-111.
