One of Gore's returned servicemen is remembered in a feature-length documentary which is being released in time for Anzac Day.

The documentary was directed by Leanne Pooley, who won best director for a documentary at the New Zealand Film Awards in 2013 for her work on Beyond the Edge.

Her latest feature documentary, 25 April, will premiere at the St James Theatre in Gore tomorrow.

The documentary features the stories of six men who fought in World War 1 using letters and memoirs from the men as source material.

One of the six is Lieutenant-colonel Edmund Bowler, of Gore, who was the first New Zealander to set foot on Gallipoli.

The documentary is said to weave the stories together using graphic novel-like animated "interviews'' based on photographs and written source material.

St James Theatre trustee Yvonne Bannerman said because of Mr Bowler's high rank, he was able to write uncensored letters to his wife and daughters in Gore.

This provided a more accurate description of the war than from most other servicemen.

Mrs Bannerman said she hoped for a sold-out premiere event.

"We are going to make a big thing out of it.''

Mrs Bannerman said it was special for Gore to host the premiere.

She hoped to organise a few special surprises which will "unfold on the day''.

The event starts at the Gore RSA at 1.30pm before the film is premiered at the theatre.

Tickets are available at the St James Theatre.
