Firefighters move a Datsun Sunny after it and an older-model Mazda Demio collided at the intersection of Deveron and Gala Sts, Invercargill, about 10.15am yesterday.

Constable Brook Armishaw, of Invercargill, said one person was taken to Southland Hospital.

He was unsure which vehicle the person had been travelling in.

It appeared the driver of the Mazda had failed to give way, but inquiries were still continuing, he said.

It was the second collision at a city intersection in about an hour, two cars having collided at the intersection of Baird and Lindisfarne Sts just after 9am, he said.

"It reinforces the message that drivers need to keep awake and pay attention at intersections.''
