Fire restrictions to be lifted in most of district

Restrictions will be lifted across most of the Southern Rural Fire District from 8am tomorrow.

Principal Rural Fire Officer Mike Grant said the restriction had been lifted in zone A because of the wetter weather.

‘‘People lighting fires still need to think and plan ahead and take responsibility for any fires they light. There is always risk associated with using fires regardless of the time of year and how wet it is. Wind is the biggest factor that catches people out.''

Zone A covers almost all of Southland and Fiordland.

A restricted fire season is still in place for zone B (pockets of high-value land including forestry, high country and conservation).

There is a year-round fire restriction in zone C, the Awarua/Waituna wetlands conservation area south of Invercargill.
