Milk tanker and truck collide

Three people were injured when a milk tanker and a truck carrying a skip collided in Eastern Southland yesterday.

Emergency services were called to the collision in Ferry Rd, near Fonterra's Edendale factory, about 10am.

Police said in a statement firefighters cut the Fonterra milk tanker driver from his cab. St John spokesman Ian Henderson said the tanker driver, aged in his 40s, sustained serious injuries and was flown by Otago Regional Rescue Helicopter to Dunedin Hospital.

Another two people - one with moderate injuries and one with minor injuries - were taken by ambulance to Southland Hospital.

Police said a crane was used to remove the milk tanker from the road and contractors removed oil spills.

The cause of the crash was being investigated, police said. The road was blocked and traffic was diverted until about 5pm.

In another crash late yesterday afternoon, a logging truck and car collided in Central Southland.

St John spokesman Ian Henderson said three people injured in the crash were taken by ambulance to Southland Hospital.

One person sustained moderate injuries and two people had minor injuries.

A fire spokesman said the crash happened near the intersection of Gap Rd West and the Winton-Lorneville Highway.
