Flying visit by RNZAF

Southerners should get a glimpse of the latest additions to the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) fleet today.

Five of the 11 Beechcraft T-6C Texan II training aircraft bought in October at a cost of more than $150million will fly in and out of Dunedin airport on the way to Invercargill, carrying 10 RNZAF instructors-in-training.

One, Flight Lieutenant Matthew Hansen, said the planes would land at Dunedin airport about 11.30am and leave about 2pm, heading for Invercargill via Central Otago.

They were expected at Invercargill Airport between 3pm and 3.30pm and were likely to fly in over the city from the northeast.

The pilots would spend two days in Southland experiencing low-level flying - as low as 80m above the ground - and negotiating the mountainous terrain of Fiordland before leaving on Thursday morning, he said.
