Police have named the man who died in car crash on SH1 at Kennington, near Invercargill, on Wednesday as Sootagaoaiga (Sam) Lavea (23), of Invercargill.
The serious crash unit is continuing its investigation into the cause of the single-vehicle crash at 1.50pm.
The car collided with a power pole which then landed on top of the vehicle.
The crash occurred near an intersection on which the New Zealand Transport Authority had put trial lights to slow motorists.
Power was out to the area for a period, and traffic was diverted while police examined the scene.
