Man dies on way to Dunedin Hospital

A man has died on the way to hospital after a tractor rolled over him on a farm in the Catlins.

St John communications adviser Ian Henderson said St John was alerted to the incident at a private property on Maitland Rd in the Catlins at 2.38pm.

An Otago Rescue Helicopter with St John paramedics on board was sent to the scene.

Mr Henderson said the man, in his 40s, was flown to Dunedin Hospital with critical injuries, but Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, has since confirmed the man died on the way to Dunedin.

Sgt Bull said the man and another man were moving firewood. It was early in the investigation and what exactly happened was not clear at this stage, but it appeared a loader had rolled over the man.

The man was not the owner of the farm, and did not work there, Sgt Bull said.

A name would be released once family were advised.
