Agent says rentals in high demand

A house rental company in Wanaka could fill another 20 houses with tenants, if the houses were available.

Housemart senior property manager Margo Goodsell told the Otago Daily Times yesterday every time the business had a rental property available in Queenstown or Wanaka, details were emailed to 550 people.

While agreeing it was hard to say how many of those were actively in the market for a rental house, Ms Goodsell said it was very easy to stop receiving the email.

A house listed in Wanaka late on Monday afternoon drew seven phone calls, seven emails, eight office inquires and six applications on Tuesday.

She expected the house to be let by Monday.

With the ski season due to open a week tomorrow, young ski field and hospitality workers are flooding into the town.

Ms Goodsell said many of those looking for winter rentals were either staying at backpackers or sleeping in their cars.
