Trust gives new sports facility $300K boost

Wanaka's new sports facility received a boost yesterday with the announcement of a $300,000 grant for flooring and sports equipment.

The grant was one of 26 approved by the Otago Community Trust at its recent meeting.

Queenstown Lakes District Council chief financial officer Stewart Burns said he was delighted by the donation.

The $13.9 million sports facility is due to be completed later this month.

In its first major funding round for the year, the community trust gave $1.4 million to various Otago projects, including $500,000 to the Otago Museum.

It continued funding the Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail, in partnership with the Friends of Alps 2 Ocean (A2O) Incorporated and the Waitaki District Council.

A $100,000 donation from the trust will go towards ensuring all the trail from Duntroon to Oamaru is moved off road.

Waitaki District Council community services group manager Thunes Cloete said the plan had always been to take the "majority'' of the A2O trail off-road, to make it "safer and better''.

The trust also continued funding for the Skeggs Foundation.

A grant of $25,000 will support the development of coaches across multiple sporting codes throughout Otago.
