Hopes high for snow

All ski industry eyes will be on the weather tomorrow.

The MetService is predicting snow to 1000m in the Southern Lakes area.

That would mean a touch of snow on the top of the Crown Range Rd, but more importantly around 9cm on the Treble Cone Ski Area, which postponed its season opening earlier this week because of a lack of snow.

Cardrona Alpine Resort, which opened for the season two weeks ago is predicted to get 13cm of new snow tomorrow.

More snow is forecast for Monday.

Southern Hemisphere Proving Grounds general manager Shaun Gilbertson said yesterday he had his fingers crossed for a decent snowfall by the end of the month.

The proving grounds, on the top of the Pisa Range, where car and tyre manufacturers test their products in cold conditions, have a full two-month schedule of customers from the beginning of July.

"I've been looking at the spiders nesting in the trees, and they're still nesting high. So I'm quietly confident it will snow,'' Mr Gilbertson joked.
