Road work before Xmas

Work to widen Mt Aspiring Rd between Wanaka and Glendhu Bay should be under way before Christmas, Wanaka Community Board member Lyal Cocks says.

Mr Cocks told this week's board meeting the work was being retendered by the Queenstown Lakes District Council and the areas that most required widening were still being identified.

Patches of broken seal along the edges of the busy, narrow road were repaired this year after police raised safety concerns.

The road is popular with cyclists, and with motorists towing boats and trailers.

In February, the council's chief engineer, Ulrich Glasner, told the Otago Daily Times $250,000 had been allocated for work on the road this year.

Lowering the speed limit from 100kmh to 80kmh is also being considered.

Community board member Mike O'Connor has called for more signs on the Crown Range Rd to indicate to tourists where they can pull over to let traffic overtake.

Mr O'Connor told Wednesday's board meeting that while there were several places motorists could pull over, there was only one sign.

The Cardrona Community Association, meeting on Wednesday night, endorsed the idea of more signs, Mr O'Connor said.
