Heavy rain closes SH6

Heavy rain falling in Westland has again forced the closure of State Highway 6 between Haast and Makarora.

The road was closed at the weekend when 20,000 tonnes of rock and gravel fell onto the highway at Diana Falls.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said today with rain and waterfalls running across the slip face, more rock and gravel is being washed on to the highway and posing a hazard for drivers.

The highway was closed at 1.30pm and the situation will be reviewed at 9am tomorrow.

More heavy rain is expected on Friday, meaning there could be further disruptions.
