Spray hearings scheduled

Five days have been set aside to hear submissions into a controversial proposal to pipe treated wastewater from the Te Anau sewerage plant 18km south to Manapouri and spray it on to rural land near Te Anau Airport.

The Southland District Council has applied to Environment Southland for a 35-year resource consent to discharge treated wastewater to land and the associated discharge of odour to air. A maximum of 4500cu m would be sprayed daily from two large pivot irrigators.

The application has attracted 150 submissions, 138 of them opposed.

The hearing will begin in Te Anau on July 14.

The district council is budgeting $10 million-$12 million to upgrade the sewage treatment works, install the pipeline and buy irrigators to spray wastewater over the 70ha Kepler Block.
