Dozens of vintage and veteran cars travelled over the Haast Pass yesterday to mark the 50th anniversary of the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand's first international rally in 1965, which followed the same route.

Among the drivers were 11 people who were in the 1965 rally, including Chris Wood, of Auckland (on the left in the photo at left) with brother-in-law Andrew Penman, of Sydney.

Mr Wood said he travelled with his father 50 years ago in a 1928 Austin 16.

This time he was intending to drive his 1924 Austin 20 all the way back to Auckland.

Mr Wood said there was a wonderful atmosphere on the 1965 rally and it was fantastic to do the same run again.

Pictured are Graham Taylor (driver), of Luggate, and his brother John, of Lake Hawea, in a 1923 Overland, at Pleasant Flat.

The rally will visit Queenstown and Invercargill today.
