Haast crime nest exposed

A "youth gang'' has been wreaking havoc in Haast, damaging property and garden equipment and even the local police vehicle.

Constable Paul Gurney, of Haast, said in his report to South Westland newsletter Community Contact the gang - which had grown to six at last check - had taken up residence in the Haast township over the past few months.

"Damage has occurred to vehicles and property, particularly garden equipment and roof lines. Even the police 4x4 was attacked recently, resulting in an expensive trip to the electrician,'' Const Gurney wrote.

"Police surveillance has ascertained the gang name to be Nestor notabilis - kea.''
