They're flying the flag in heartland New Zealand.

Flags depicting the countries involved in the Rugby World Cup and attached to a massive irrigator between Omarama and Twizel have been attracting plenty of interest.

Farm owner Doug McIntyre said his partner ordered the flags, bolstered by a few silver fern flags, to show their support for the World Cup.

The flags were attached to the 1240m irrigator which was one of the longest in the world. At one stage, he understood it could have been the longest but it might have since been beaten by one in Mexico. The irrigator is beside State Highway 8 and plenty of motorists were stopping to take photographs.

In Oamaru, a giant rugby ball, adorned with a silver fern, has appeared outside Oamaru Veterinary Services on Thames Highway.
