People with physical or mental disabilities are being encouraged to enjoy the thrill of snowsports through adaptive skiing open days at the Remarkables skifield.

The week-long 2010 Adaptive Snow Sports Festival runs from July 25-31, with events at the Cardrona skifield in Wanaka on most days.

The Remarkables adaptive programme co-ordinator Ross James said his field's interactive open days provided an opportunity for everyone to participate in snowsports regardless of ability.

"Whether it is a cognitive, physical or sensory disability, we can help anyone on to the slopes and show them how fun it is to truly feel the freedom of the mountain.

"We have instructors and volunteers specially trained to teach the programme and have equipment and techniques to help everyone. We're looking forward to welcoming future snowsports enthusiasts, their families and their caregivers to the mountain."

The Snowsports School at the Remarkables is hosting one day out of the Adaptive Festival on Tuesday, July 27, the first time the field has been included in the festival.

Another adaptive open day will be held at the Remarkables on Saturday, September 11.

On each of the open days the ski area provides free rentals for specially modified skis and snowboards with a free lift pass, lesson and volunteer support for firsttimers and a discounted rate of $50 for others.

With limited equipment available for the open day, Mr James said advance registration was essential.

Priority on the rental gear will be given to people from the Wakatipu, Southland and Cromwell areas who are trying a snow experience for the first time.

Adaptive skiing has been a specialty at The Remarkables for years, with a regular programme running throughout the season.

Mr James, who has over 25 years' adaptive snowsports instruction and disability services experience, expects about 30 participants and volunteers at the festival day.
