Fresh tracks in the Shadow Basin carved by competitors in the freeski qualifying rounds at the Remarkables yesterday.
It was being called the greatest day of skiing at the Remarkables this season, with hundreds converging on the field to make the most of the 35cm of fresh powder snow which fell in the 24 hours to yesterday morning.

Clear skies and perfect conditions greeted skiers and boarders yesterday with "huge smiles all round", ski area manager Ross Lawrence said.

"It [was] just premium Remarks up here [yesterday] - people are riding fresh powder and relaxing in the sunshine on our deck.

"There is nothing like climbing up out of the cloud on the road and into blue skies to have wall-to-wall freshies greet you, and that's what all our guests experienced."

Mr Lawrence said the ski area was buzzing yesterday and with the Winter Games NZ due to officially begin in seven days, the snow was needed to ensure conditions stayed in good shape.

Across the Wakatipu Basin, Coronet Peak received 16cm of snow in 24 hours, prompting skiers and snowboarders to flock to the mountain to carve some fresh tracks.

While the snow was excellent over the entire mountain, visitors were raving about conditions on Greengates and the Exchange Bowls, staff said.
