Dunedin physical education student Roseanne Robinson (Hill
City) is one of six Otago athletes named in the New Zealand
team for the Oceania championships in Cairns in September.
Robinson (19), the New Zealand junior champion, has been
selected in the women's 10km race walk.
The other Otago athletes named in the team are Marshall Hall
(Taieri) discus, Daniel O'Shea (Hill City) 400m, 400m
hurdles, relay, Jerram Huston (Taieri) shot put, Alexandra
Skerten (Taieri) under-20 400m hurdles, Lauren Wilson (Hill
City) under-20 100m, 200m and relay.
Robinson's best time for the 10km walk is the 50min 30sec she
recorded when winning the New Zealand women's 19 grade title
in Christchurch in March.
She also won the 3km track title.
Robinson finished seventh in the women's open event over 20km
when she made her international debut at a transtasman event
in Hobart in February.
She was the third under-23 walker to complete the course.
Wilson (17), a year 13 pupil at Queen's High School, is a
member of Brent Ward's sprint squad.
Her potential was first identified and fostered by former
Australian coach Jim Baird when she joined his squad at the
age of 12.
She won bronze medals in the 100m and 200m at the New Zealand
secondary school championships in Timaru in December and gold
medals in the women's 19 grade at the New Zealand club
championships in Christchurch in March. Hall (21), a
University of Otago student, recorded eight of the 10 best
throws on the New Zealand ranking list last season.
His best performance was the 51.39m he threw at the Sydney
Track Classic in February.
He retained his national discus title on Christchurch.
O'Shea (21), an accounting student at Otago, won his first
national title in the senior men's 400m hurdles in
Christchurch in 53.43sec.
He reduced his time to 52.29sec when finishing sixth at the
Australian championships in Perth.
Huston (25) has a best shot put of 15.29m, which he achieved
when finishing seventh at the Australian championships in
Perth.
Skerten (18) has a best time for the 400m hurdles of
64.45sec, which she ran when finishing fifth at the New
Zealand championships.
• Dunedin student Hannah Newbould ran 9min 15.68sec when
finishing sixth in the women's 3000m on the first day of the
world junior athletics championships in Moncton, Canada on
Monday.
It was a personal-best time by nine seconds.
Dunedin's Rebekah Greene won the feature 1500m in 4min
28.92sec at the Trevor Craven Memorial meeting in Vancouver.
Greene won the award for being the outstanding high school
athlete at the meeting.
