Rozie Robinson
No mistakes were made this time. Hill City athlete Rozie
Robinson's 3km walk record was legal.
Two weeks earlier, Robinson broke Lisa Mathieson's 1994
record by 3sec with her time of 13min 57.72sec.
But it could not be registered as an Otago record because it
was held during the New Zealand Masters Games and there were
not enough walking judges round the track.
Everything was legal on Saturday and Robinson's time of 13min
42.30sec at the Otago championships is the Otago senior
women's record.
Robinson (22), a physical education student, was well
organised and had the lap times written on her forearm before
the race.
"When I was given the lap times I knew I was ahead of the
target times and the record was on," she said.
It is also a Caledonian track record and beat the 13min
51.93sec that Gabrielle Gorst (Hastings) walked when winning
the New Zealand title in 2003.
It was a useful prelude for the New Zealand v Australia
Challenge in Hobart next weekend.
Robinson is a member of the New Zealand team. Last year she
finished third in the under-23 events and was placed seventh
overall in the 20km road walk.
Hannah Blair (Taieri) won the Otago women's javelin title
with a throw of 38.56m.
Blair (25), an Ashburton primary school teacher, returned to
Dunedin for her first competitive throw of the season under
the eye of her coach Raylene Bates.
She is confident of retaining her New Zealand title for the
third successive year in Auckland at the end of next month.
Andrew Whyte (Hill City) had too much speed round the bend
and won the senior men's 200m title in 22.01sec from clubmate
Daniel O'Shea 22.13sec and Matthew Robinson (Southland)
22.31sec.
He also won the junior men's 400m by almost 3sec in 48.95sec.
Southland athletes Charlotte Muschamp and Greer Alsop
dominated the women's 20 triple jump and smashed the
Southland junior and open records.
Muschamp improved by 48cm to win the event with 12.49m and
Alsop by 9cm.
They head the women's 20 national ranking list and are placed
second and third on the open women's list.
Madaline Spence (Hill City) broke the 1991 Otago girls aged
14 and 15 record of Megan Fraser (Taieri) by 0.22sec when she
won the Otago women's aged 15 and under 80m hurdles in
12.31sec.
Rebecca Gibson (Gore) won the women's 200m in 26.38sec from
Sophie Napper (Taieri) 26.84sec and Laura McPhail (Hill City)
27sec.
The women's 20 100m was won by Megan McPhail (Hill City) in
12.57sec with Napper second in 13,17sec.
Oceania champion Liz Wilson (Hill City) won the masters
women's aged 35 to 49 100m in 13.37sec and Claire Giles
(Caversham) the over 50 title in 14.79sec.
