Retirement is not a word in Val Muskett's vocabulary. She continues to beat the odds with her ultra-distance running.

Age is no barrier to the Otago long-distance runner who has been selected to represent New Zealand for the 11th time.

Muskett (58) will continue her long international career when she competes at the world 24-hour championships in Katowice, Poland, in September.

Her best international performance was to finish 11th at the world 24hr challenge in South Korea in 2008, when she covered 205.14km in Seoul. She was the first Commonwealth woman home.

Muskett will be accompanied by two younger team-mates, Vivian Cheng (Wellington) and Amy Campbell (Auckland), in the women's team.

The Commonwealth bronze medal-winning men's team of Bryan McCorkindale (Christchurch), Wayne Botha (Auckland) and Alex McKenzie (NZ Army) are joined by Graeme Butcher (Masterton) and Brendon Keenan (Christchurch) in the men's team.

Both teams will be managed by Val's husband, John Muskett.

Uultra running is not yet an Olympic sport and the world championship is the ultimate prize in the sport.

It is the first time New Zealand has sent two teams to the world 24-hour championships.

Members of the team will use the New Zealand 100km championships at Hagley Park, Christchurch, in May to fine-tune their fitness for the world event. Muskett will be defending her New Zealand title.
