Auckland runner Dale Warrander won his third national road title in Hamilton today while Otago's Shireen Crumpton was equally convincing in claiming her first women's crown.

Warrander led out early on the Ruakaka complex course and won by nearly a minute from Sam Wreford of Canterbury in a time of 30 minutes 10 seconds.

Craig Kirkwood of Waikato Bay of Plenty, who can point to more training in the swimming pool and on the bike to running, finished strongly to claim third in 31min 19sec.

Kirkwood is aiming for the Ironman triathlon in Taupo next March.

For Warrander, who turns 35 next week, the win celebrated the birth of his son 12 days ago.

His victories span 14 years with his first title in 1994 and his second in 2003.

"I decided to get an early lead and then maintain a good tempo," the Athens Olympic games marathon representative said.

"The course was good for the spectators, but it had a lot of sharp turns and there was a bit of a breeze around the back," he added."

Crumpton clocked 34min 15sec, heading Belinda Wimmer of Waimea by 1min 17sec, with Aucklander Hanny Allston a close third.

"I decided to go out hard and get a good time," Crumpton said.

"My goal next year is to return to the Gold Coast marathon in July for another win which will make it three in a row."
