Valerie Adams might have continued her long winning streak with victory at the Diamond League meeting in Eugene, Oregon, today but it was by only 3cm and her biggest throw came late in the competition.

The two-time Olympic and three-time world champion won the women's shot put at the Prefontaine Classic with a trow of 20.15m, narrowly ahead of China's Lijao Gong who threw 20.12m. Gong was the only competitor to heave two attempts beyond 20m.

Adams, who hasn't been legitimately beaten in competition for more than three years, produced her best throw in the fifth round, previously recording throws of 19.9m and 19.96m.

American Michelle Carter was third with a throw of 19.65m.

The Prefontaine Classic was Adams' first competition of the northern season and she went in after niggling injuries to her elbow and knee. She's gearing up for a tilt at a fourth world title in Moscow in August - hoping to become the first female thrower to win four world titles - and will also compete at Diamond League meetings in Lucerne, Paris, London, Stockholm and Zurich.

Her win today means she now a three-way tie on four points in the Diamond League after two shot put competitions.
