Te Anau athlete in critical condition

New Zealand athlete Lesley Cantwell is in a critical condition in a Tahitian hospital.

Cantwell, from Te Anau, is part of the New Zealand team competing at the Oceania Area Track and Field Championships and complained of feeling unwell after winning the 5000m race walking title in Papeete. The 26-year-old was taken to hospital, where she remains.

"We are working to support the family and to get them to Tahiti as soon as possible," Athletics New Zealand chief executive Scott Newman said.

The Oceania championships began yesterday and will finish on Thursday.
