Life just keeps getting better for Columba College pupil Hanna English.

English (17) competed for New Zealand at the Under-17 Football World Cup in Costa Rica in March.

Last month, she won her first national athletics title in the New Zealand secondary schools senior girls cross-country in Palmerston North in 16min 5sec.

English took the lead on the hill 400m from the finish and won by five seconds from Audrey Gregan (St Cuthbert's College, Auckland) and Isabella Richards (St Kentigern College, Auckland).

Now, English and schoolmate Charlotte Cahill (17) have been named in the 10-strong New Zealand girls team to contest the Australian secondary schools cross-country championships in Perth in August.

Cahill finished eighth in the New Zealand championships, and Columba College finished fourth in the three-person senior girls teams race.

There are 10 runners in both the girls and boys teams, and Columba College is the only school to have two athletes in the New Zealand squad.

English finished fourth in the New Zealand secondary schools championships last year and was named in the paper team after the event.

She will compete in the under-18 race in Perth and Cahill in the under-20 event.

Cahill finished 19th in last year's national secondary schools cross-country championships in Christchurch. She gives her coach, Mike Weddell, credit for her significant improvement.

English used to be coached by Weddell but joined Dave Stinson's squad this year.

Columba College sports co-ordinator Shona Harvey said it was ''a coup to be the only school in New Zealand to have two runners in the team''.

Columba has worked hard to lift its sporting standards in recent years.

''It's all about building a culture and making sport enjoyable for all the girls,'' Harvey said.

''We have put systems in place for those who want to excel and get to the next level in their sport.''

Columba College has had two other runners travel to Australia with the New Zealand secondary schools cross-country team. Laura Carruthers was selected in 2011 and Sian English, Hanna's sister, in 2012.
