Athletics: Sutton planning 24hr test run around inlet

Barring the Antarctic, Andersons Bay Inlet in June might be as far away as you can get weather-wise from Death Valley in July.

But that is where Glenn Sutton will be on June 6 as he counts down the days - and hopefully counts up the money - before he takes on the Badwater 135 in California in late July.

Sutton (41) plans to be on his feet for 24 hours as part-fundraiser and part-preparation for what is dubbed ''the world's toughest foot race''.

Sutton would like some company for the countless anti-clockwise circuits around Andersons Bay Inlet, which is why he is inviting people along to run or walk with him for a short period.

''I'm just trying to get people out there and do a couple of laps,'' Sutton said.

''I'm a Waverley boy myself, so I know a few people in the area.''

The 24-hour session adds to months of preparation for Sutton since participating in last year's event, which left him wanting more.

He ran the Routeburn and Kepler tracks over the summer and tackled the Otago Central Rail Trail more recently.

''I did the rail trail about three weeks ago as a stepping stone and this is another stepping stone before the main event.''

Sutton will take on 217km in the Badwater 135 in July, so the Andersons Bay Inlet exercise is all about time in his running shoes, regardless of the drastically contrasting weather between the two places.

''It'll be a lot different - it could be quite miserable and it tends to get a bit breezy [at the inlet],'' he said.

''But it's more to spend 24 hours on my feet just chugging around.''

The heatbox which Sutton built in preparation for last year's Badwater will be at the Bayfield Park car park and people could try out the treadmill inside.

''People can have a bit of a taste of it - it's not going to be as hot as Badwater is, but it will be about 37 or 38degC, so it doesn't take too long to work up a sweat.''

Managing the heat is one of the main aspects Sutton learnt from last year's experience.

''You can't control the heat, but you can control yourself to adapt to the heat using ice around the pulse points of your body and stuff like that.

''Before you get hot, just try and cool yourself down.''

A sausage sizzle and bouncy castle will provide food and entertainment and will raise funds for Sutton while he goes about his day-long run.
